Haurun Jäteauto executed a project that investigated the amount and variety of waste at the BättreFolk Festival in Hailuoto, Oulu in the summer of 2024. Hauru aimed to increase recycling and make it more effective, especially regarding plastics.
At the festival, the amount and variety of waste produced is very challenging. There is energy waste, bio-waste, cardboard, glass bottles and cans, which presents many challenges in recycling and sorting.
For the public, sorting and recycling should be made easy, or even fun and encouraging. It also should not burden the festival staff too much – collecting and post-treatment of waste should be effective and a well-thought out process. When sorting waste in festival environments, the return of dishes should also be taken into consideration and prevent wine glasses and plastic pints from ending up among the waste.
